San-Francisco based chain The Melt has opened it's first Hollywood location, in the Sunset Vine Tower. The restaurant serves grilled cheese sandwiches and seasonal fresh soups, in several different varieties, with a rotating weekly special.

Walgreens Flagship Now Open

Hollywood is now home to Walgreens West Coast Flagship Store, located on the corner of Sunset and Vine. This is no regular drugstore: the 23,509 square foot concept space includes a sushi bar, frozen yogurt station, a wine and spirits shop with a cigar humidor and virtual bartender, an eyebrow bar, as well as fresh juice, smoothies, coffee and espresso. The ribbon cutting was attended by several celebrities.

Sunset | Gower Studios, once home to Columbia Pictures, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The studio is where such televisions programs as "Soap," "Who's the Boss," and "The Monkees" were filmed, and currently hosts "Dexter," "The Newsroom," and "Scandal" among others. Award-winning films such as "It Happened One Night," "Bridge on the River Kwai" and "Lawrence of Arabia" were made by Columbia when it was headquartered there. The four winning designs from the Sunset & Vine Pole Banner Contest, created by students at Helen Bernstein High School, have been fabricated into street pole banners which were installed last week throughout the district. Over 150 sets of banners were installed by Amgraph.

use caution when visiting Hollywood to avoid theft from vehicles. If
you have valuables in your car, please remove them if possible when
leaving your car. If you have to leave them in your car, make sure they
are hidden from site, and that your windows are up and doors are
locked. This will go a long way to preventing theft from your

New Walgreens Concept coming to Sunset & Vine

Walgreens is planning to open a new concept store in the space at Sunset & Vine formerly occupied by Borders Bookstore, media outlets are now reporting. The new store will be a "high end" store which will be open 24 hours a day and include a nail salon, a beauty center, a sushi counter and a yogurt station. LAPD Hollywood is hosting a Town Hall Meeting for the community to come and meet the Neighborhood Watch Leaders from the Hollywood area. They will be presenting 2011 crime updates and 2012 goals, as well as discussing quality of life updates, community policing, and crime prevention. Guest speakers will include Hollywood Commanding Officer Beatrice Girmala and City Councilmember Eric Garcetti. Mayor, Police Chief Honor BID Security

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck honored three Sunset & Vine BID security officers at a press conference on December 16. Oscars Academy to Build Outdoor Theatre

AMPAS (The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences) has announced plans and released renderings of the amphitheater and event space it plans to build in Hollywood on the site which previously had been hoped to house a museum of motion pictures. The outdoor space, measuring 17,000 square feet, is expected to open in May 2012, when it will begin showing classic films. Adjacent to the theatre will be a 10,000-square-foot patio for special events. Read more in the LA Times article.

Emerson College to Break Ground in December

Emerson College presented their plans to proceed with constructing their new facility on Sunset Boulevard at Gordon Street at a community meeting. The college laid out their timeline, which includes groundbreaking the first week of December. They hope to have their certificate of occupancy by December 2013. The mixed use project includes a ground floor cafe open to the public, parking on the ground floor and three subterranean levels, the college in the middle of the project starting on the second floor, and two residential towers for students.

AMPAS Outdoor Screening Site Slated for Next Year

AMPAS (the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) has announced plans for their land in Hollywood, which include an outdoor movie screening area which could be completed within a year. SVBID Security Nabs Tourist Bandit

Last Friday, Officers with the Sunset & Vine BID Security Team were approached by a man reported that he had been robbed. The man was chasing the suspect on foot and the security officers followed, eventually catching the suspect after he pulled a knife. The officers took the suspect into custody and transferred him to LAPD. The suspect was later identified as the "tourist bandit," a parolee at large who escaped from federal custody earlier this month and is suspected of two bank robberies in Southern California in the past week. Morrison Appointed to LAHSA

Antonio Villaraigosa. Morrison is a co-founder of Hollywood 4WRD, a community coalition to end

Activities League and a member of Home for Good, the Business Leaders

Emerson College Lawsuit Dismissed

As reported at the recent Sunset & Vine BID Annual All Property Owners Meeting, the lawsuit against the proposed Emerson College development at Sunset Blvd. and Gordon St. has been dismissed. The project is now free to move forward but Emerson has not announced a schedule. The news was reported on Curbed LA, which you can read here.

After a week where the readers of the popular food blog voted in five separate polls, Bowery was declared the "wild card" winner. The burger, an 8 oz. grilled sirloin burger served on an English muffin with choice of toppings, will now face the winners from other Eater cities. Congrats to everyone at Bowery!
